THE REUNION DINNER
Small, but sweet - the best way to describe the 58 years reunion of Terra Nova class of '65.
Frustrated by our inability to have our 55th year reunion at the appropriate time due to that nasty COVID stuff, the reunion committee decided to organize a reunion at a very non-traditional time, celebrating our 58th anniversary of graduation from dear old Terra Nova High. The thought was that none of us is getting any younger, so why not get together when we can? There was a slight miscalculation by scheduling the event on Mother's Day weekend which gave some people cause not to attend, but a core, stalwart group made the sacrifice and convened at Nick's Rockaway Beach restaurant, a mainstay of Pacifica forever.
Unfortunately, our class president-for-life, Jean Rogers Barnhart , fell ill shortly before the event and was unable to attend - missing her first reunion EVER! She sent her regards and husband Paul to represent the family. Fortunately, we had the benefit of all her pre-reunion organization and notes, and everything flowed smoothly because of that. Thanks, Jean, for all that you do/have done/will do for the class. Thankfully the illness was nothing major and she will be more than ready for the next event.
That being said, we had a signup of about 40-ish, with a few unable to attend at the last minute. We fit nicely into a very pleasant banquet room at Nick's, with excellent food service by staff and, for some of the attendees, a prime rib dinner of epic proportions. Doggy bags for excess meat and bones for the pooches were a post-dinner requirement. The chicken dinner, although certainly quite ample and tasty, was not quite the same eye-popping plate.
In Jean's absence, Greg Fassler was given the job of emcee. Greg has always been fond of public speaking (must be the genes of his politician mother) and he did not fail to add interest and humor to his emcee job. Of particular note was his story about his Sea Bowl bowling shirt and trophy that were on display. (Was anyone ever that small?) The shirt and trophy were being donated to the Pacifica Historical Society the following day in commemoration of the May 31 closing of the Sea Bowl. Following some other remarks and an open-mic session for other comments, the mic was wrested away by Ray Lenci who declared the emcee job complete.
At the conclusion of the remarks, the group was asked if they wished to have a 60 year reunion. The question was answered with a resounding YES. Time for the reunion committee to gear up for the next event! So everyone - start thinking about 2025. We'll keep you posted.
Thanks to Ed Harrison for taking the photos of the arriving people so we can recognize our classmates in their current form.
THE PICNIC
Saturday morning dawned foggy, socked-in at the beach and over Highway 1, a normal day for Pacifica. A handful of us braved the traffic crawl along Highway 1 (where were all those people going on that narrow stretch of road?), cruised the length of Linda Mar Blvd (no - it hasn't gotten any wider, just busier) and convened at San Pedro Valley Park located at the end of the Blvd. Just like many of our days at Terra Nova, the sky away from the coast had cleared and was brilliantly sunny with a pleasant temperature. Although our numbers were diminished by some people leaving after Friday night to get home for Mother's Day, the 10 or so of us that showed up had a pleasant time conversing in an atmosphere without the ambient restaurant sounds. We enjoyed the sun and watching the adjacent group of families and kids running all around while we lolled on our picnic benches. All too soon we left, returning to the now relatively sunny day on the coast, marvelling at the lines at some of the little restaurants/take-out places along the way. In the absence of most of us, Pacifica has become quite the little trendy spot. Who would have thought it?
